Breakfast at 1am, head torches on and it’s an early morning start leaving at 2 am to the summit of Jebel Toubkal. Our route takes us up the south cirque, a steep climb across scree and rock that will lead us to the summit which takes around 3/4 hrs to reach. With panoramic view stretching as far south as the Sahara.
We then retrace our steps back down the mountain to the refuge for a beautiful breakfast and some down time before heading back down the valley staying the night with our mountain village friends at Aremd (1,900m).  We expect it to take around 10 to 11 hours.
We will be treated to a traditional Moroccan celebration meal with local dancers for the evening.

  • After a beautiful traditional breakfast we will go for a village walk and morning swim to the secret waterfalls before trekking a short distance back down the valley to Imlil where we meet our transport and drive back to Marrakech to enjoy hot showers before exploring the spice-scented souks of Marrakesh.

Frequently asked questions

The following frequently asked questions may help answer any queries you have about Jason Black Mountaineering, what this expedition involves, and what is required. If your question isn’t answered here please check our dedicated Expert Advice page, otherwise don’t hesitate to get in touch.

  • Each member will Tip Hassan our lead guide €50 he then will distribute the tip between the staff.

  • Yes for sure you can book Hassan who will show you a side to Marrakesh reserved for the few. The cost is €100 in total for the full group. Pay him direct after your expedition.

  • This is not a technical climb, and you don’t need any experience, but having a certain level of physical hiking fitness helps.

  • Nearly 60% of our customers book to travel solo. The average group size is 6-10 on this trip and an average age of around 25-65 but this can vary.

  • Spring / Autumn are best to do this trip as the city is not too hot and night time temperatures on Toubkal are a little warmer than winter. They are still often below freezing though – bring layers!!

  • Yes, of course! If you would like us to extend your stay either side then just ask.
If you choose to arrive early or depart later than the stated itinerary then there is an additional cost of €70 for a private transfer.

  • If you have dietary requirements and or food allergies, please let us know prior to departure. Moroccan food is excellent though not particularly varied. Breakfasts usually consist of bread and ham with coffee or tea. Meals eaten out are reasonably priced – kebab and bread cost only about MAD 70. In main towns, it is possible to find very good French and Moroccan restaurants where a meal and French wine are very reasonably priced from MAD 220 upwards. Generally, dinner is likely to cost between MAD 80-120 depending on what you drink. Bottled drinks are available at very reasonable prices, but alcohol is not widely available in Morocco due for cultural and religious reasons. But still, in some hotels and restaurants, you will be able to purchase beer, wine and spirits, but you will pay imported prices. Please be aware of local laws, believes and traditions, and be very sensitive and respectful while consuming alcohol.

Vegetarians can be catered for but there is a fairly limited choice. This is particularly the case in rural parts of this trip.
Vegans and those on gluten-free diets may find this region very challenging and may need to supplement meals with their own supplies.

  • You can leave any luggage not needed at the hotel in Marrakech.

To embark on the Mt Toubkal expedition, participants should possess a reasonable level of fitness, however the climb is suitable for individuals without prior experience.

We had the most incredible experience during our 4 Peaks challenge with Jason and John as our mountain guides. Not only are they highly professional and knowledgeable, but they also bring so much fun, encouragement, and inspiration to the journey. Our Four Peak Challenge became more than just climbing mountains. It was a true lesson in leadership, teamwork, and spirit. They were supportive every step of the way and created an environment where we could challenge ourselves while feeling safe and motivated. I would highly recommend Jason, Black, and John to anyone looking for a full, enriching mountain experience. They are outstanding guides and leaders who make every climb unforgettable.

I was delighted to be part of a brilliant team recently who successfully took on and conquered the national Irish 4 peaks, with guidance and support throughout from Jason and John. Two highly experienced, professional guides who made the weekend so much fun, with plenty of teaching and learning moments, and very well organised. If you're thinking of doing any event, just book it! You won't regret it. We're signing up for 7 summits next 😂

Our family had a truly wonderful experience trekking to Everest Base Camp with Jason Black Mountaineering. From start to finish, the journey was exceptional. Jason and his team bring an incredible depth of knowledge and experience that goes far beyond words — their passion, professionalism, and care made us feel supported every step of the way. This trek wasn’t just a physical challenge; it became a spiritual journey for all of us. The mountains, the culture, and the shared moments along the trail helped us grow both physically and emotionally. Jason’s leadership created a space where we could push our limits, embrace the beauty of the Himalayas, and truly connect as a family. I wholeheartedly recommend Jason Black to all my friends, and we’re already looking forward to our next adventure with him!
