Combining Ama Dablam and Island Peak creates an exceptional high-altitude adventure that balances acclimatisation, skill-building, and challenge in the heart of the Everest region. Island Peak (6,189 meters) serves as an ideal warm-up climb, offering essential acclimatisation while honing mountaineering skills. Climbers navigate glaciers and steep ice sections in preparation for the more technical ascent of Ama Dablam.

Expedition Highlights

The Ama Dablam and Island Peak Combo Expedition starts with a trek to higher altitudes, beginning at 2,800m and gradually ascending through increasingly challenging terrain.

After acclimatizing and trekking to 4,730m, climbers reach Island Peak High Camp at 5,550m for a summit attempt at 6,189m. Following a return to Chhukung, the journey continues to AmaDablam Basecamp at 4,450m, where climbers rest and prepare for a demanding rotation between Basecamp and Camps 1 and 2.

The final push to the summit of AmaDablam at 6,812m presents steep, technical challenges, requiring advanced climbing skills. After summiting, the expedition ends with a descent back to 2,800m, with extra days built in to account for potential weather delays.

Jason black will be the expedition leader and with one of the most ground-breaking Irish mountaineers of a generation at your side, you’ll be in the very best company to reach beyond what you thought was possible and become an Ama Dablam and Island Peak summiteer.

How Fit Do You Need to Be for Ama Dablam (6,812m)

Ama Dablam is one of the most technical and physically demanding 6,000m peaks in the Himalayas. It requires elite endurance, high-altitude acclimatisation, technical climbing skills, and mental resilience. This is not a trekking peak—it is a true alpine climbing challenge with steep rock, ice, and exposed ridge sections.

📌 Physical Requirements for Ama Dablam

1. Elite Endurance & Cardiovascular Fitness

  • The climb involves steep, sustained exertion for multiple days, with 1,000m+ daily ascents at high altitude.
  • Summit day is 10–15 hours, requiring high oxygen efficiency and endurance at 6,812m.
  • The approach trek takes 6–8 days to reach Base Camp (4,600m), with daily 5–7 hour hikes.

✅ Training Recommendations:

  • Hike 15–25 km (9–15 miles) with a 15–20 kg pack at least once a week.
  • Stair climbing (60 min with a 15 kg pack).
  • Running, cycling, or swimming (3–5 times a week, 45–90 min per session).

2. Strength & Load-Carrying Ability

  • You will carry a 15–20 kg pack on steep, technical terrain.
  • Expect vertical rock climbing (5.7–5.8 grade) with exposure at 6,000m+.
  • The Yellow Tower (6,100m) and Mushroom Ridge (6,400m) require upper-body strength for rope ascents.

✅ Training Recommendations:

  • Squats, lunges, deadlifts (for leg power).
  • Step-ups (50 cm box) with a 15 kg pack.
  • Planks & core exercises (for stability on uneven terrain).
  • Farmer’s carry (15 kg per hand) for grip & pack strength.
  • Pull-ups, dead hangs, and grip training (for rope ascents and rock climbing).

3. High-Altitude Acclimatisation

  • You will be climbing and sleeping above 6,000m for multiple nights.
  • The risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), HAPE, and HACE is high.
  • pre-acclimatisation climb (such as Island Peak, Lobuche East, or a 6,000m+ peak) is highly recommended.

✅ Preparation Recommendations:

  • Train at altitude (above 4,000m) before the expedition if possible.
  • Use a hypoxic tent or altitude training mask to simulate low oxygen levels.
  • Practice deep breathing and controlled oxygen efficiency techniques.

4. Advanced Technical Climbing Skills

  • Ama Dablam is a highly technical climb, requiring solid rock, ice, and mixed climbing skills.
  • You must be proficient in fixed rope climbing, rappelling, and exposed ridge travel.
  • The Yellow Tower and Mushroom Ridge are very exposed, requiring confidence with jumars and self-belays.

✅ Skills to Master Before Attempting Ama Dablam:

  • Climbing at least 5.7–5.8 rock grade with a backpack.
  • Ice axe use & crampon techniques on steep ice/snow slopes (50–60°).
  • Jumar (ascender) use for fixed rope climbing.
  • Rappelling and self-arrest techniques.
  • Multi-pitch rock climbing (practice on alpine routes).

5. Mental Toughness & Resilience

  • Ama Dablam’s exposed ridges, vertical walls, and high-altitude suffering will push you to your limits.
  • Expect extreme cold (-30°C), exhaustion, and the mental challenge of long exposure on steep terrain.
  • You will spend multiple nights at high altitude (Camp 2, 5,900m) on small ledges.

✅ Mental Training:

  • Train in cold, harsh conditions to simulate summit day suffering.
  • Do long, exhausting training hikes and climbs back-to-back.
  • Train with a weight vest or heavy pack to simulate climbing with gear.
  • Practice multi-day alpine climbs with exposed ridges.

I'm not long back from the most amazing adventure, an African/Tanzanian adventure which got to the very heart and soul of life in Tanzania and an experience I will never forget. The trip was exactly as the website itinery stated, literally taking us to places both well known and clearly well loved by Jason, completely off the beaten track and into rural life not accessible to just anyone. A well organised, clearly planned trip of a lifetime which we were well prepped for. The adventures started from the day we arrived and we were immersed into the sights, smells, tastes, sounds and textures of Tanzania. We embarked on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with confidence in Jason's knowledge, expertise, professionalism, friendly chatter and so many laughs along the way. His team of 45 porters, guides, chefs, kitchen/waiter crew and toilet dude, to name just a few of their roles, were well known to him and instilled yet more confidence within our group of 14 intrepid explorers. Benson, Jason's lead guide was also key to the team and personally for me, Hope was the guy who was just the most patient when the challenge of the summit was tough. The team were highly organised, efficient and confidently prepped in ensuring we had the best food, the best gear and we all felt we were in safe and helping hands at every moment of our ascent, summit and descent. The magic of the mountain really was phenomenonal but the most amazing adventures continued after descent when we were fully immersed in the cultural day with the villagers and families of our 45 staff. This Tanzanian adventure has been a roller coaster that I'm not willing to get off just yet! The memories will be treasured forever. I highly rate and recommend Jason Black Mountaineering and would not hesitate to book with the team again.

Not long back from the adventure of a lifetime to Island Peak with Jason and team. With Jason you get the full expedition experience and meet some amazing folk along the way as he has a great web of connections. Jason puts safety first and foremost and ensures your experience is the best it can be. There is great craic along the way and long trekking days really glide by. If the Himalayas are your thing (and they are just magnificent) then a trip with JB is the only way to go.

This Kilimanjaro expedition is much more than a mountain climb , it is a cultural experience of the kindness and generosity of the Tanzanian people. We were made to feel so welcome and have made special connections with the guides and team that we will always hold dear. By undertaking the Kilimanjaro expedition under the skilled and experienced Jason Black Mountaineering Team we were supported every step of the way to meet our personal goals and at all times felt completely safe, supported and part of a bigger team. The whole experience was so uplifting, spiritual and fun. The Tanzanian song, dance and camaraderie encapsulated the One Team One Dream philosophy that we genuinely felt a part of. Our fellow mountaineers were an amazing group of people that we have had the privilege of sharing an adventure of a lifetime with. We were so well fed and cared for we could not recommend Jason Black Mountaineering more if you are considering climbing Kilimanjaro. You will not just climb a mountain but experience a team that is knowledgeable , compassionate, and ethically motivated to do the right thing for the mountain, the environment, locals and visitors. Thank you Jason, Benson and Lipman and team for creating the most wonderful experience that we will always remember and hold special in our hearts and memories. Adrian and Marie

Wow! To celebrate entering my eighth decade I signed up to climb Kilimanjaro with Jason and his team. My trip surpassed all expectations. First I climbed Mount Meru with Benson, my wonderful guide - it was tough but amazing, and brilliant to trek through the Arusha National Park at the start, past giraffes etc. Then I joined the rest of the gang and we set off to climb Kilimanjaro. Again I found it tougher than expected, but the team of guides, porters, cooks and even toilet engineer were superb and made the whole thing both achievable and enjoyable. All Jason's extras - the visit to the Masai village, to the swimming lake, to make coffee, to the school he's help build etc. etc. all added massively to the experience. The add-on safari at the end was incredible. And then I had 10 days in Zanzibar. It was the experience of a lifetime, and I can't praise Jason or his team too highly. They were all fantastic!

His knowledge of the terrain, his professionalism, and constant support made a huge difference. Whether it was offering guidance during difficult parts of the climb or sharing fascinating insights about the local culture and environment, Hassan was an absolute gem. If you're looking for a well-organized, exhilarating trek with top-notch guides, I highly recommend Jason Black Mountaineering. This was an adventure I'll never forget!

Jason convinces you that you can get up whichever mountain you are standing at the base of, he is inspirational. I’ve just completed the 4 peaks challenge and can’t quite believe what we did on Carrauntoohil but he knew we could, so we did it.
