Mountain Skills Course Covers
Course covers:
- Practical navigation in the mountains.
- Planning a route using maps and compass.
- Clothing and equipment overview and advice
- Introduction to different map scales
- How to set the map
- How to interpret contours
- How to interpret key symbols ie how to find a footpath, fence, stream etc
- How to plan and follow a route using paths and other key features
- How to plan and follow a route off the path
- How to estimate distance using pacing and timing
- How to navigate in poor or limited visibility
- How to re-orientate yourself if you do get lost
- Movement over steep ground
- Mountain weather – how the weather affects our route planning and choice during the day.
- Emergency procedures in case of an incident
- Choice and use of equipment including a simple demonstration/introduction of use of GPS units, their advantages and limitations. (You do not require a GPS unit for this course)
- Environmental knowledge and considerations and the principles of Leave No Trace.

First Aid Course Covers
The Rescue Emergency Care (REC) Level 1 Training Course in Ireland is an essential program designed for individuals who wish to gain fundamental skills in emergency first aid and rescue. This introductory course is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, volunteers, youth group leaders, and anyone interested in being prepared for emergency situations in remote or challenging environments.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a REC Level 1 certification, valid for three years. This certification is recognised nationally and is a valuable addition to any personal or professional development plan.
Our REC Level 1 First Aid Course takes one full day, encompassing both theoretical instruction and hands-on practical exercises.
The REC Level 1 course provides comprehensive training on the following topics:
- Basic Life Support (BLS): Learn essential life-saving techniques including CPR, airway management, and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
- Casualty Assessment: Develop skills in assessing a casualty’s condition, identifying life-threatening issues, and determining appropriate responses.
- Bleeding and Wound Management: Gain knowledge in controlling bleeding, treating wounds, and preventing infection.
- Shock Management: Understand the signs and symptoms of shock and learn how to manage a casualty experiencing this condition.
- Minor Injuries: Learn how to treat minor injuries such as cuts, grazes, and minor burns effectively.
- Hypothermia and Hyperthermia: Understand the principles of managing casualties suffering from extreme temperature conditions.
- Practical Scenario Training: Engage in realistic scenarios to practice and reinforce your skills in a controlled environment.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Confidently perform CPR and use an AED.
- Conduct thorough casualty assessments and prioritise treatment.
- Effectively manage bleeding and wounds.
- Recognise and treat shock.
- Provide care for minor injuries.
- Respond appropriately to cases of hypothermia and hyperthermia.
- Apply their skills in practical emergency scenarios.
