Ama Dablam characterizes itself with its unique pyramid shape. The hanging glacier seen on the southwest face of Ama Dablam bears a resemblance to the sacred ornament box used by Sherpa Women, which is known as Dablam, therefore giving it the name “Ama Dablam” This peak is 6,812 meters in elevation from the sea level. This mountain is not impressive for its height but for its aesthetics it holds. Mt. Ama Dablam is located in the Khumbu region of Nepal, south of Mt. Everest. One should see some splendid views during the ascent to the pinnacle.

About The Climb

First we will trek up through the kumbu and climb direct to the summit of Island peak standing at 6120m. Then its directly onto Ama Dablam standing at 6820m. My usual ascension to Ama Dablam is done from the Southwestern ridge. We will set up three camps just below and on the right of the hanging glacier, “Dablam”.

The hike is modest up to camp 1, but the challenge starts from camp 1 to camp 2 as it gets more technical in the narrow edges of ridges made from granite. This challenge increases even more from camp 2 to camp 3. Some risk of glacier falls cannot be escaped but it is said that adventure without risk is Disneyland. One should train himself the skills of rock and ice climbing and get used to high altitudes before thinking of Ama Dablam. If you have former experience as a climber and wish to join this expedition team to the world’s most extraordinary mountain, then Ama Dablam Expedition is for you.

Jason black will be the expedition leader and with one of the most ground-breaking Irish mountaineers of a generation at your side, you’ll be in the very best company to reach beyond what you thought was possible and become an Ama Dablam summiteer.

Tourist Visa

Immigration Office, TIA (Tribhuvan International Airport) under the Department of Immigration has been facilitating tourists flying to Nepal by providing visas on Arrival.

To obtain a visa upon arrival by air in Nepal you must fill in an application form and provide a passport copy. Visa application forms are available at the arrival hall, though some airlines provide this form on the flight. There are now visa registration machines in the immigration hall for people with electronic passports, which will automatically fill out the visa form for you after inserting your passport. Or, you can get a visa from Nepalese Diplomatic Missions stationed in your own country before your arrival.

Getting in Nepal

There are many entry points in Nepal but most of you will take a flight to Kathmandu which is the only entry point for travelers who are entering by air. Your expedition will officially begin after flying to Kathmandu where you will be picked up by Jason Black Mountaineering at the airport, so you need to provide your arrival details in advance. And also lets us know if your flight gets delayed right away so we can manage everything accordingly.

Domestic Flights

Domestic flights in Nepal are the main intercommunication to reach the region where you are going for your expedition as most of these regions are disconnected by road transport. Your flights into the Khumbu and any other region that are mentioned in your trip program will be reserved by us on your behalf. Due to the terrain and landscapes of Nepal domestic flights might get caught in weather delays which is why we recommend your return flight back to home be changeable at any time.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude Sickness is an effect of high-altitude atmospheric pressure that results in a quick change in oxygen level and air pressure of a human body. The symptoms will arise while walking at a high altitude without properly acclimatising the body. It can happen to anyone even if they have great physical fitness if you climb faster at a higher altitude. It is better to ascend gradually to prevent altitude sickness.

Money

There is good access to ATMs anywhere in most city areas, however, you will find it hard in rural areas. Different banks have their maximum withdrawal amount limit. Most hotels, restaurants, airlines, and travel agents accept cards as well. It is more important to have enough cash as there will be very limited or no ATMs access in trekking areas and also some reserves cash for emergencies. USD is selectively acceptable in Nepal but still, you need to make sure you have Nepalese currency on hand during the expedition.

Tipping

There is no significant rule about tipping your guide or porter but it has been more common in Nepal. It is on you to decide whether to thank the guide and porter with tips or not. But in most cases, guides and porters expect tips from you though they don’t ask for tips verbally.

Drinking-Water

The water quality in Nepal isn’t the greatest so it is better to use a water filtration or purification tablet. You can also drink boiled water if you like. Make sure to drink a lot of water during the expedition as your body requires more at a higher altitude.

Safety

Nepal is a heaven for adventures and is comparatively a safe destination for those adventures. There is a low rate of serious crime however you should still take sensible safety measures. Keep an eye on pick-pocketers and snatchers in buses and tourist areas. You can avoid walking with a large amount of cash on your own. Always let your guide know if you’re going out during the trip.

Internet and SIM Card

Most cities have extensive access to the internet, also hotels, restaurants, and cafes that offer free WIFI. But outside the cities, in the remote trekking areas, it’s fair to non-existent. During the expedition, the internet is available at the base camp for a certain amount of cost. You can easily purchase a SIM card at an affordable cost. You can use the data package using the SIM card as well.

Vaccinations & Immunisation

Before traveling to Nepal, please consult your travel clinic for updated information on vaccinations and immunisations. The commonly recommended vaccinations are Chickenpox, Diphtheria-Tetanus, Polio, Shingles, Covid-19, Hepatitis A & B, Encephalitis, Malaria, Measles, Rabies, Typhoid, and Yellow Fever.

Everything about my trip to Kilimanjaro with Jason Black Mountaineering was wonderful. He is a master at planning and logistics. He leaves no stone unturned. His guides and porters were top class. His chef was amazing at preparing and producing fresh and nutritious food for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the mountain. Two young boys in our group loved pancakes and had them for breakfast each day. I dislike onions and had onion free omelettes prepared specifically for me each morning without even asking. The whole itinerary is published on the website, but Jason’s team still gave a detailed briefing each evening after dinner for the next day. Each morning in our tent, we were woken up by a friendly porter with a cup of specially prepared coffee/tea and a bowl of hot water to wash up. After washing up and packing our provided expedition bag, we would go to the chow tent for breakfast. Our porters would then take our bags and tents and have the whole thing ready for us when we arrived at the next campsite.I am a very inquisitive person and like to know what’s happening ahead of time. Every question I had was answered patiently and thoroughly and obviously been well thought through, allaying any fears I may have had and enabling me to focus on myself. Jason has been climbing the highest mountains on earth for a long time and will advise you on every little detail about high altitude camping, sleeping, acclimatisation, hydration and energy conservation. After a day or two I was confident enough to sit back and trust the process as I knew Jason and his team were highly competent have thought through all the little details freeing me to concentrate 100% on my own well being. I cannot recommend Jason Black Mountaineering any higher. You can’t go wrong with him and his team. Bravo Jason!

On the 23rd July 2022 I arrived in Moshi ,Tanzania Africa. I had not been to Africa before. From all angles I could see the "Mountain" Kilimanjaro after arrival.. It was very clear to me from the engagement with the locals ,the Mountain is everything to the native people of Moshi, its their livelihood. They get no support from the government, even during covid virus .They depend on us visitors coming to climb there Mountain .That's how they earn the salary ,I seen the guides that accomplished my group for the week on the mountain , form a queue to collect the salary the day we returned from summitting the great Mountain. .Jason Black has built a relationship with these local guides ,everything is transpairable and a trust has been formed between Jason and the Lipman team(African guides). The same team that accomplished him in 2014 to accomplish a world record on that same Mountain. It occurred to me the day we arrived all the natives knew Jason Black, they were shaking his hand in the markets and almost everyone seemed to know him. He has such respect for this tribe of Moshi people and there Mountain. Jason was the perfect choice of Mountaineer for me to accomplish my goal/to Summit Kilimanjaro at 59yrs my age at time of achievement. The miracle is ,I choose Jason Black as my leader and anything is possible after that I discovered.AmenBernadette Glancy >Carrick on Shannon

I climbed Kilimanjaro with Jason in August 2022. This trip was truly amazing. From the first moment I contacted Jason I knew this trip would be a genuine African experience. We visited local villages, attractions and a coffee plantation. For me this part of the trip was as good as the Kilimanjaro experience. The Porter crew on the mountain were excellent and very friendly. The food was great and I am very proud to say that my whole group made it to the top! We all had the same mindset of wanting to take our time on each walk, taking lots of photos and having lots of breaks. I cant wait for my next adventure with Jason Black.

In May 2022 I trekked to Everest base camp with Jason and a group from Donegal. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget. Jason prepared us so well before and answered every question we had. We experienced the busyness of Kathmandu before taking the non-commercial route to base camp which was really special. Jason’s love of Nepal and respect for the local people was evident every day. He took time to get to know everyone in our group on a personal level and allowed everyone to be themselves. The fact that I am blind was never an obstacle and he made sure to describe everything and let me touch as much as possible on the way so that I didn’t miss out on anything. He challenged us to push ourselves more every day but we always had lots of fun. He is such a positive person to be around with a great respect for nature and other human beings. I’ve learned a lot from him and I’m looking forward to more adventures in the future 🙂

Walking in Donegal - what a fantastic weekend in a beautiful place! As a lone traveller, my time at Everest Lodge was more than I could have expected. The warm Donegal welcome, the wonderful homemade food and the easy comfortable atmosphere all made for an unforgettable time. Jason's intuitive capacity to support and guide enabled me, and I believe all of us in the group, to leave on Sunday with a sense of accomplishment, awareness, and the inspiration to crack on with the next adventure, whether big or small. I had the best time ever.

May 2022 - I had a fantastic weekend hiking with Jason and staying at the lovely Everest Lodge - with four others who were also there for the weekend. Despite Jason’s incredible achievements, his demeanour is so ‘down to earth’ and his focus during our stay was on ensuring we were appropriately challenged while hiking, we felt fully at home at Everest Lodge and we had a lot of fun along the way. The ‘Ireland Walking Weekend’ surpassed my expectations at every level and I’d highly recommend hiking with Jason whenever the opportunity arises.

I had a wonderful weekend with Jason and a number of walking enthusiasts in May - would recommend it to anyone, regardless of level of experience in the mountains. Whilst somewhat familiar with the main mountains in Donegal Jason showed us other areas which are kept "under wraps" and hence felt very special to a non-local. I found the guidance with navigation on the mountain particularly helpful and the food over the course of the weekend was amazing!
