Exciting times are ahead as our determined six-member team, spearheaded by the renowned mountaineer Jason Black, has just touched down in Nepal, ready to etch their names into history with a daring combo climb of Island Peak and Ama Dablam. This monumental journey kicks off with most of the team having arrived this morning, while a few remaining members will join them tomorrow. From Kathmandu, they will board helicopters and soar into the heart of the Kumbu Valley, the renowned gateway to the majestic Himalayas.
A huge shout out to @makalu_outfit, who have been instrumental in equipping Jason with cutting-edge, bespoke 8000m European goose down summit suits. The suits look phenomenal, boasting an array of innovative features tailored from Jason’s extensive experience and learnings as a high-altitude specialist.
The adventure officially began with a memorable traditional Nepalese dinner, hosted by none other than @14dawa, the genius behind the inspiring 14 Peaks challenge. As stories of incredible high-altitude feats were exchanged, the evening set an electrifying tone for the mission ahead.
As morning dawns, the team’s departure is set, spirits high, enthusiasm booming, and motivation charged. They have relentlessly prepared for this venture and carry the aspirations of possibly rewriting Irish mountaineering history by becoming the first full team to conquer the esteemed “Mother’s Necklace” on Ama Dablam.
Why Ama Dablam?
Ama Dablam, often referred to as the “Matterhorn of the Himalayas,” stands not just as a mountain but as an emblem of majestic beauty and unparalleled adventure. Rising 6,812 meters above sea level, it’s known for its stunning aesthetics—its summit projects a striking likeness to a mother’s embrace, reminiscent of the traditional pendant worn by Sherpa women.
For climbers, it is not just the height or the technicality that Ama Dablam offers but the spectacular scenery and serene solitude that stir their spirits. Unlike other Himalayan giants, Ama Dablam provides an exquisitely challenging yet gratifying experience with its daunting ridges and breathtaking views of Everest and the neighboring peaks.
This expedition, therefore, is not just another climb. It’s a journey into the heart of the world’s most mesmerizing landscapes and perhaps a defining moment for Irish mountaineering. Ama Dablam’s allure captivates all who dare, its majesty rewards those who reach its zenith, and its whispers will echo in the hearts of those Irish mountaineers challenging its heights.
Lead by Jason Black, an Everest and K2 summiteer with a global reputation, the team is acutely aware of the immense challenge laying ahead. Over the next 30 days, they’ll be meticulously navigating and working along the route, with hopes of triumphantly waving the Irish flag atop the summit come early December.
Stay tuned for updates as Jason and the team forge ahead on this ambitious quest. We’re thrilled to share this journey with you as they aim to make Ireland proud with their unprecedented feat!
